What Is Belkyra?

Belkyra is a Health Canada–approved prescription injectable containing deoxycholic acid. It is approved to improve moderate to severe fullness caused by submental fat—the fat located beneath the chin. In the United States, deoxycholic acid injections are marketed under the name Kybella®.

How Does Belkyra Work?

Deoxycholic acid is a molecule naturally found in the body that helps break down dietary fat. When injected into the fat beneath the chin, Belkyra breaks down targeted fat cells. The body then gradually clears the treated cells, creating a slimmer and more defined chin profile.

What Happens During Treatment?

Your physician will assess your chin, neck anatomy, skin elasticity and aesthetic goals before creating a customized treatment plan. During the procedure, the treatment area is marked to guide a series of precise injections. Ice, topical numbing or local anesthetic may be used to improve comfort.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

The number of sessions depends on the amount and distribution of fat beneath your chin. Some clients achieve their desired results after a few treatments, while others may require up to six sessions. Treatments are scheduled at least one month apart so swelling can resolve and progress can be assessed.

Belkyra is the Canadian brand name for deoxycholic acid injections, while Kybella is the brand used in the United States. Both are designed to reduce fat beneath the chin.

Belkyra can cause temporary stinging, burning, pressure or tenderness. Ice, topical numbing or local anesthetic may be used to make treatment more comfortable.

Visible swelling is an expected part of the treatment response and may be significant. It often peaks during the first few days and gradually improves. Some firmness or numbness can last longer.

Results appear gradually as the body clears the treated fat cells. Changes may become visible several weeks after treatment and continue to develop throughout your treatment series.

Fat cells broken down by Belkyra can no longer store fat. However, remaining fat cells may enlarge with weight gain, so maintaining a stable weight helps preserve your results.

Common reactions include swelling, bruising, pain, redness, firmness and numbness. Less common but more serious risks include nerve injury that may cause an uneven smile, difficulty swallowing, tissue damage and infection. Your physician will review the risks before treatment.
