Understanding it

A closer look at hair loss & thinning.

Understanding Hair Loss & Thinning

Hair grows in cycles, and at any moment most follicles are actively growing while a minority rest and shed. Thinning becomes visible when more follicles shift into the resting phase, or when follicles miniaturise and produce progressively finer, shorter hairs.

Patterns matter. Androgenetic loss usually widens the part or recedes the temples, telogen effluvium sheds diffusely across the scalp a few months after a trigger, and scarring alopecias cause patchy loss with changes to the scalp surface itself. Identifying the pattern is the first step of treatment.

Causes & Contributing Factors

Genetics and hormonal sensitivity to DHT drive most pattern hair loss in both men and women. Other common contributors include thyroid disease, iron deficiency, postpartum hormonal shifts, rapid weight loss, illness, high stress, certain medications and traction from tight styling.

Several factors often overlap. A genetic predisposition can sit quietly for years and then become obvious after a stressful period or a nutritional deficiency pushes more follicles into shedding at once.

When to Consider Treatment

Earlier is better. Follicles that have miniaturised can often be revived, but follicles that have been dormant for years may not respond. If your part is widening, your ponytail feels thinner, or you are seeing noticeably more hair in the shower for longer than three months, it is worth an assessment.

Sudden patchy loss, scalp pain, burning, scaling or redness deserves prompt medical review, as scarring alopecias need different and more urgent treatment.

Skinfolio's Approach to Hair Restoration

We begin with a scalp and hair assessment, a review of your medical and family history and, where indicated, bloodwork to look for treatable causes such as iron or thyroid abnormalities. Treating the underlying driver is often as important as treating the scalp.

From there we build a plan that may include in-clinic scalp treatments such as microneedling and injectable therapies to stimulate follicles, alongside topical and, where appropriate, prescription support. Everything is chosen for your pattern rather than applied as a standard package.

Personalized Treatment Protocols

A typical protocol runs as an initial series over several months followed by maintenance. Consistency is what produces results here: hair responds to sustained stimulation, not to occasional sessions.

Home care is part of the protocol. Gentle handling, an appropriate shampoo routine, adequate protein and iron intake, and treating any scalp inflammation all support what we do in clinic.

Realistic Expectations & Timeline

Because of the growth cycle, nothing visible happens quickly. Reduced shedding is usually the first sign, often around two to three months. Visible density typically takes six months or more to appear in photographs.

Treatment aims to slow loss, thicken existing hair and reactivate miniaturised follicles. It does not create new follicles, and areas that have been bare for many years generally need surgical options. We will be honest at consultation about which category your scalp falls into.

Get the facts

Different types of hair loss require specific treatment plans based on their unique underlying causes.

Genetic hair loss causes follicles to shrink over time and produce thinner hair until they stop growing.

Male pattern thinning often starts at the hairline while female pattern thinning usually occurs across the top.

Temporary shedding can be triggered by stress or illness and often improves once the trigger is managed.

Autoimmune conditions like alopecia areata can cause the hair to fall out in small round patches.

Repeated pulling from tight hairstyles or extensions can lead to permanent damage known as traction alopecia.

FAQ

Everything you need to know.

Most people experiencing hair thinning or loss are good candidates for non-surgical hair restoration. The best candidates are those with early to moderate hair loss where follicles are still present but miniaturized. A consultation will assess your specific situation and determine which treatments are most appropriate for you.

Most hair restoration treatments are comfortable and well-tolerated. LED light therapy is completely painless. Treatments like Fotona Dynamis and Hair Follicle Treatment cause minimal to no discomfort. Microneedling may cause mild temporary discomfort, but a numbing cream can be applied if needed to ensure your comfort.

Treatment frequency depends on your specific protocol and the stage of your hair loss. During the active restoration phase, most patients start with treatments every 2 to 4 weeks. Once optimal results are achieved, you typically transition to a maintenance schedule of monthly or bi-monthly sessions to preserve your progress.

Absolutely. All hair restoration treatments offered at Skinfolio are appropriate for both men and women. Female pattern hair loss, as well as other causes of women's hair thinning, respond effectively to our comprehensive approach and personalized protocols.

Hair loss, particularly pattern hair loss, is often a progressive condition. Without ongoing maintenance, hair loss will typically resume. Most patients transition to a maintenance schedule of monthly or bi-monthly treatments to preserve their results and continue supporting healthy hair growth long-term.

Yes. Our treatments can be used alongside topical or oral hair loss medications like minoxidil or finasteride. Combining approaches often yields better results by addressing hair loss through multiple mechanisms. Please discuss all medications and products you are using during your consultation.

Most treatments have no downtime. You can return to normal activities immediately after LED Light Therapy, Fotona Dynamis, and Hair Follicle Treatment. After Microneedling, you may experience some redness for 24 to 48 hours, and sun exposure should be limited during this time.
